London pioneered the concept of public transport back in the nineteenth century but by the end of the twentieth suffered some of the most congested roads in the world. As the city gears up to host the 2012 Olympic games its leaders are implementing a programme of rehabilitation. A perfect setting then for the first of the Energy Opportunities brainstorming events which focussed on the issues surrounding smarter mobility.

Geoff Cutmore's Analysis

On Wednesday the 13 of July, we challenged 80 of the most influential minds in the field of transport to try to brainstorm solutions to a growing threat - carbon emissions from the movement of people and goods.

In a newsflash from the future, we heard the headline from 2035 that emissions from transport had plunged 25% over 2011 levels - and we challenged all in the room to write the story, and identify the one biggest contributor to that fall.

The discussion was fierce as participants worked together on tables and were forced to think about the situation from a perspective they may not usually take: Erna Solberg, head of Norway's opposition, came up with solutions that business could embrace, while the chairman of Ford UK made suggestions for consumer action.

Everyone who came had time to share and discuss their own ideas before tables voted on the one idea they felt should be taken further. In the comments below you can see what each table came up with. Some of the most exciting ideas from the event encouraged consumer pressure via the tool of social networking to urge government and business to speed up green actions.

We were finally treated to an inspiring talk from the President of Iceland who explained how all three sectors had worked together over 50 years to create a country that was well on its way to energy independence and carbon neutrality. He pointed out that business needed to be proactive in creating the sorts of products, like green cars, that consumers wanted to buy and stressed the need for coordination.

The discussion carried on late into the evening informally over drinks as we enjoyed the stunning view over London.

We only need Coal and Nukes until we complete the smart power grid.

A Smart Power Grid would Collect and Distribute power simultaneously.

Induced EMF not Internal Combustion.

Webers per Meter Squared is the Field of Green Energy Dreams.

Put up the Grid take down the Power Plants. Not very pretty but Ohm so much cleaner.
The video gives a feel and a few 'insights' into the event. Will you be able to give us a more in-depth analysis, e.g.of top 10 ideas?
